Each site in the network gets its own set of database tables for posts, options, and metadata. Plugins and themes are installed once at the network level and activated per site. This reduces maintenance overhead but requires careful governance around updates and compatibility testing.

Domain mapping, SSL certificate management, and per-site resource allocation add operational complexity. Network-activated plugins run on every site in the network, making performance profiling essential to prevent a single plugin from degrading the entire network.

Scaling a multisite network requires attention to database connection limits, object cache partitioning, and cron job scheduling. Sites with divergent traffic patterns may benefit from separate infrastructure rather than a shared multisite installation.
